Pet Portraits - Caring for your Pet Portrait

Using pastel as a medium is notoriously delicate and even the slightest rub or knock can destroy a drawing. Using spray fixatives can help slightly, but the only way to offer full protection is to frame the drawing behind glass as soon as possible. For information on how to care for your portrait, please read below for some of our top tips on how to handle your pastel artwork until it can be framed.

Carefully peel away the masking tape from the mount board

When you receive your portrait, you will find it packed tightly between two sturdy mount boards. To separate these boards, place them onto a flat surface and either cut the tape with a blade or peel away carefully on one side so that it opens like a book to reveal the drawing underneath.

The portrait itself will be covered with a sheet of glassine paper (a smooth, translucent paper) to offer further protection. Remove this paper by carefully peeling the tape with one hand, again just on one side, while securing the drawing firmly with the other. Be very careful as any friction or sliding movement is to be avoided as this can smudge the drawing.

If you wish to store the drawing whilst you wait to get it framed, simply fold the glassine paper back into place on a flat surface as if closing a book and secure the edges with masking or artists tape – other tape will tear away the paper when it is being removed. If you wish to replace the mount board then make sure the boards meet together perfectly before wrapping the tape very firmly around both sides to prevent any friction. Always store the portrait on a flat surface with the drawing facing up to prevent any pastel being dislodged.

If you are planning to frame the picture yourself, then please read our framing section for some handy tips. We can also frame the portrait for you before sending out if you wish - please see our framing prices.
