Pet Portraits - Framing Options
Our artist Gillian Usher loves working with pastels as they are so delicate, responsive and light. However, these qualities also make pastels very fragile and even the slightest touch can leave your portrait damaged. The only sure way to keep a pastel pet portrait safe is to frame it securely behind glass.
Ready made frames are sold in stores in every high street, some with and some without mounts. If you opt for a frame with a mount then you need to find the portrait size as opposed to the frame size. The portrait size is the space available for a picture whilst the frame size is the area inside the frame excluding the mount. Professional framers are more expensive but stock much higher quality frames and you have the advantage of choosing your frame and mount colour as well as not having to worry about framing it yourself.
Framing your own portrait
When framing your pastel pet portrait, you should always use a mount to prevent the portrait touching the glass. It is always our preference to use a mount as it gives the portrait that extra special look. If you would rather have no mount, then a ‘lift’ or a ‘spacer’ can be created by inserting a thin strip of board (such as mount board) between the edge of the picture and the glass, hidden by the edge of the frame.
Always be careful when inserting the portrait into the frame to prevent the top layer of dust from falling onto the glass. To stop the dust falling onto the glass, try not to frame the picture facing down.
Using a professional
When your pastel portrait is shipped to you, it is sandwiched between two mount boards. The portrait itself is covered with a sheet of glassine paper which offers protection against and rubbing that could occur. If you need to re-package your drawing to have it framed in a shop then it is very important to carefully replace the sheet of glassine paper and fix it firmly with tape to prevent any sliding or movement.
Once your portrait is framed it should be safe to be seen and enjoyed for generations. Take care not to hang it in direct sunlight as it could possibly fade over time and if you ever have it re-framed, please remember to treat it with care and never leave it face down.
If you are ordering a pastel portrait and wish to have it professionally framed, it might be a good idea to have it shipped straight to a framer. Simply let me know which framer when ordering and I send it there. Alternatively, we work with a local framer to offer a framing service so you can have your portrait framed and ready to hang or present as a gift. Please see below for price list.
